Restoration of the Cathedral of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the city of Zubtsov, Tver Region

The SEAN Group of Companies completed a complete restoration of the Cathedral of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This stone, three-altar church is located on the left bank of the Volga River.

  • The city's history reveals that the site of the current church was once occupied by a wooden Assumption Church. Empress Catherine II had many wooden churches rebuilt in stone. Seven thousand gold rubles were allocated for the construction of the current church, among other funds.
  • Construction lasted from 1796 to 1801. Initially, the church was a rectangular structure with a dome and a separate bell tower. In 1853, chapels dedicated to the Holy Myrrhbearer Mary Magdalene and the Holy Blessed Grand Duke Alexander Nevsky were added. The church building and bell tower were combined into a single architectural ensemble in the Russian Classicism style.
  • Over the course of its more than 200-year history, the church, like the entire Russian nation, has endured difficult and tragic periods. In the early 2000s, it was in a deplorable state. Traces of desecration dating back to the 1930s were everywhere. Before the restoration, the church was essentially supported by donations from believers and the efforts of the parishioners themselves.
  • The church's geographic location and natural resources are a great asset. It stands in a beautiful location, surrounded by greenery and watered by rivers.
  • Someone cared about the needs of the area's believers. Vladislav Vladimirovich Tyshchenko, president of the Volga Country Club company, and his wife, Tatyana Andreyevna, learned that the church needed restoration assistance and expressed a strong desire to help and participate in completing this noble undertaking.
  • Considering the scale of the investment required to restore the Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God, a program was developed for a complete renovation and improvement of the surrounding area. First and foremost, this includes replacing the dome with a cross and the entire church roof, replacing windows and doors, reconstructing the porches, performing complete exterior finishing, replacing the entire heating system, repairing and refinishing the vaults, replacing the wooden floors with warm stone ones, and refurbishing the interior in accordance with Orthodox liturgical traditions.
  • The main renovation program is scheduled for a year and a half and will be financed in stages with the participation of various construction companies. The general contractor, SEAN, carried out the work under contract. The program was fully financed by V.V. Tyshchenko, with donations from parishioners and the participation of philanthropists.
  • The very first and most complex stage of the renovation was creating the technical specifications for replacing the old church dome and bell tower spire with new ones, manufactured by the Volgodonsk-based JSC IC Grant, using funds from a leading agricultural firm in the Zubtsovsky District. Resolving the issue required a highly qualified team of installers and, most importantly, given the lifting height and dimensions of the structures, a crane of the required capacity. District Head S.A. Avtonomova was responsible for arranging the arrival of a 160-ton high-rise crane, with funding from V.V. Tyshchenko.
  • On the eve of the feast day of the Dormition of the Mother of God, the cross and dome of the church lit up the ancient town of Zubtsov with their gold, raising great hopes in the hearts of the citizens. Subsequently, invisible work was carried out to reconstruct and strengthen the church's rafter system. The roof was subsequently replaced using a modern roofing material—a special metal with a seven-layer polymer coating. The blue color of the roof was chosen deliberately; the church is dedicated to the Holy Mother of God, and blue is the color assigned to her in liturgical tradition. Today, the church's roof delights the eyes of the people with its heavenly hue.
  • The next stage of the renovation involved replacing all the church windows with new double-glazed windows. The entrance doors, consisting of three entrances with two entry groups each, were also replaced. Using funds raised by parishioners and a significant contribution from the shareholders of the Zubtsovsky Machine and Machinery Plant, the church's 450-kg bell was cast and raised to the bell tower. Following this, work was completed on the interior of the church, including repairs and finishing of the walls and vaults of the main room, installation of heated stone floors, and a new, modern heating system.
  • Another important aspect was the initiative of V.V. Tyshchenko, who shouldered all the financial costs, and the district administration allocated the adjacent parkland for a long-term lease. This eliminated the possibility of private development on the site, preserving it and improving it for children's leisure and recreation.
